Restoring a Digital SLR camera to default settings

Restoring a Digital SLR camera to default settings

At times it may be required to restore a Digital SLR to it's default menu settings. Resetting the camera menu is often a simple solution to solve what may appear to be a fault.

Two button camera menu reset: Restoring default settings
Most of the commonly used camera settings can be restored to default values by holding two buttons simultaneously on the camera body identified with small green dots. The control panel switches off briefly while settings are reset. This option is good if you are unsure which settings are selected and they are having a negative effect on your images. The buttons used for the reset vary between camera models but are easily identified with the green dot. Please refer to your camera user manual 'reset' section for further details on which buttons are used and which options are reset.

It is also possible to reset specific menu items. The options vary between camera models. This means that you only need to reset part of the menu, not all the most commonly used settings. Common options are:

  • Reset shooting options
  • Reset setup options
  • Reset custom settings
  • Reset user settings

Saving and loading your settings
When performing a camera menu reset, your personal menu settings will be lost. Before resetting your camera, the camera menu settings can be saved to a memory card and loaded again when required. Saving or loading the camera menu settings can be performed as follows:
  • Save Settings: Setup Menu > Save/load settings > Save settings
  • Load Settings: Setup Menu > Save/load settings > Load settings

Note that Save/load settings is not available on all Digital SLR cameras. Please refer to your camera user's manual for more information.
