Can my digital camera take black and white images?

The Nikon D50, D70, D70s, D100, D2H, D2Hs and D2X cameras do not have an option to record black and white images. All Nikon digital cameras capture the original images as RGB colour data (Red, Green and Blue) and must discard most of this data to produce a black and white image. Performing a conversion to black and white using software at a later date allows the user to select which images to convert and the possibility of producing both a colour and black and white version of the same image.

Converting colour files into black white is easy using the black and white conversion tool available in the Pictureproject software provided with Nikon digital cameras. A black and white conversion tool is also available in Editor option of Nikon View 6.2 and the optional Nikon Capture (version 4.2 or later).

Nearly all COOLPIX cameras feature a black and white recording option. However, the COOLPIX 4200 and 5200 do not feature a black and white colour mode; black and white images can be taken if used in the 'Copy' scene mode. However please note that the 'Copy' scene mode is intended for the reproduction of documents, and therefore may not produce desirable results in all situations.
