Step 1a: Wireless Camera Setup - Windows - Ad-Hoc

The following information assumes that the computer is equipped with a built-in wireless LAN adapter that is installed and working properly. If you are using a third-party wireless adapter, see the documentation provided by the manufacturer for creating an Ad-hoc network.

There are several different ways to configure a wireless network and wireless COOLPIX camera. This method, the Ad-hoc network, assumes that a computer has wireless capabilities (either built-in or with a PC Card or USB wireless adapter), Windows XP SP2 and a Nikon wireless COOLPIX.

The steps below will guide you through in setting up an Ad-Hoc Wireless connection from your camera to your computer:

Step 1: Select the Windows Start button> Control Panels> Network Connections.

Step 2: Right-Click on Wireless Network Connection > Select Properties.

Step 3: Choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.

Step 4: Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and click OK.

Step 5: Click on the Wireless Networks tab> Select Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box> Click the Add button in the Preferred networks section.

Step 6: Configure the Wireless Network. Enter the desired network name in the Network Name (SSID) field (You will need this name later so remember exactly what you entered). Select the "This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network: wireless access points are not used" check box. Select an authentication method from the Network Authentication drop-down menu. You can select Open (preferred) or Shared. Select an encryption method from the Data encryption drop-down menu. You can select WEP or Disabled. If you choose Disabled, click the OK button in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window and proceed to the next step. For easiest operation and fastest image transfer choose "Disabled."

Step 7: The "View Available Wireless Networks" area will now show any available infrastructure (antenna icon) or AdHoc (computers) network. The list on the right side will show the available networks. Choose the network that you setup in step six above and click the "Connect" button at the bottom. If an error message is displayed in the left side of the "Available Networks Window".

Your computer is now setup to join a network and you can proceed to configuring the camera.
