How to avoid blurry or noisy pictures when shooting indoors with a COOLPIX camera?

COOLPIX cameras have many exposure modes which preset the camera settings to achieve a desired effect, using the wrong mode can lead to poor results especially if the mode selected will not allow flash to be used.

Tips to improve images taken indoors:

  1. Use the camera in Auto Mode
This mode uses flash automatically to produce the best results. Flash will reduce blurring because flash uses a shutter speed which is fast enough to freeze the image. The flash on most cameras will operate automatically but on some it must be user activated when required.
  2. Check the flash is not covered
A common reason for under-exposed flash pictures on Coolpix cameras is a finger in front of the flash window. Check this before considering camera settings. The resulting image will usually will be under-exposed with a different amount of flash light reaching the subject across the image.
  3. Stay within flash range
Smaller Coolpix cameras generally have less powerful built-in flash units. If images look under-exposed, move closer to the subject to provide more light. Note this also restricts the angle of view which can be a limitation.
  4. Use all available lighting
If possible switch on more room lighting as well as using the flash, this will increase the available light and reduce the amount of noise in the picture. Coolpix cameras automatically set the best white balance for the picture when mixed lighting is used.
  5. Reduce noise using manual ISO sensitivity settings
In most camera modes including Auto mode, the camera will automatically set the ISO sensitivity when using flash. In some cases the picture may appear noisy if the camera sets a high ISO sensitivity setting which will enhance the brightness electronically. You can try to reduce the noise by using the manual ISO setting in the camera menu down to ISO100-400. The camera will now need more light for the correct exposure so it will increase the flash output if possible.
  6. Use external flash
Some Coolpix cameras allow connection of an external flash via a hot shoe connector, external flash units are usually more powerful and can provide illumination over a longer distance allowing you to move away from the subject and get better results in darker environments.
