Technical Service Advisory for users of the Nikon F6 film SLR camera

Thank you for choosing Nikon for your photographic needs.

It has come to our attention through an internal audit based on our own product environmental standards that a part containing levels of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) that potentially exceed the standard value specified in the RoHS Directive* has been used in some F6 film SLR cameras produced and/or placed on the market after July 22, 2019.

* RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU and 2015/863/EU) originated in the European Union to restrict the use of certain hazardous materials in electrical and electronic products. Since July 22, 2019, the use of DBP in electrical and electronic products is restricted and standard values apply.

Nikon will replace the potentially affected part in the relevant products placed on the market after July 22, 2019 free of charge to the customer, even if the warranty has expired, upon a request basis.

Summary of the issue
Nikon controls the use of certain hazardous materials in its products in accordance with the European Union's RoHS Directive. Our suppliers are required to provide us with information detailing the chemical substances contained in the parts they supply. The supplier’s information regarding the part described here indicated that they were compliant with the RoHS Directive.
However, a recent internal audit found indications that the levels of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which has been regulated by the RoHS Directive since July 22, 2019, used in the certain internal camera part is likely to exceed the standard value set in the RoHS Directive.

Response
Shipments of the relevant product were suspended as soon as our internal audit identified the potential non-compliance with the RoHS Directive in the part.
The potentially affected cameras exhibit no issues or problems in terms of product quality, function, or performance.  Further, as the camera in no way compromises the user's health or well-being under normal use, you may continue to use your camera without any concern. However, Nikon is willing to replace the applicable part upon request.

Preventitive actions
In response to this finding, all relevant employees of Nikon Group will be re-trained to ensure compliance with the EU's RoHS Directive. We will also strengthen our inspection process, and instruct and better manage suppliers with regard to the RoHS Directive in an effort to prevent issues like this from occurring again in the future.
