Nikon's high-speed telephoto lenses have large front elements which prohibit the use of a filter being fitted to the front of the lens. To overcome this Nikon incorporated a slot near the rear of the lens and provide a holder in which regular sized 52mm, 39mm or 40.5mm filters (depending on the lens) can be used.
As polarizing filters must be rotated to be of practical use, Nikon's range of slip in circular polarizing filters feature a geared wheel allowing the polarizing filter to be rotated when fitted inside the lens.

It is important to note with some lenses that a filter is in place in the filter holder. The optical construction of the lens has been designed with the filter in place. If a holder is inserted without a filter, image quality may be affected. Check your lenses user manual for more details.
