A mechanical impact to the lens unit caused by shock, pressure or blocking the lens movement can result in damage to its mechanical parts. This can cause further damage to the integrated motors or drives. In such cases, the camera will display the error message 'LENS ERROR', as shown below.
This message indicates a problem with the cameras lens mechanism which requires the camera to be sent to a Nikon service department for repair. Before sending for repair, we recommend to first try:
1. Turn the camera off and then on again.
2. Remove and replace the battery.
Depending on which parts have been damaged the problem may be fixed by repairing and re-adjusting the lens unit or may require the replacing the whole lens unit, the cost of which might exceed the camera’s value.
