Z Teleconverters TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x Q&A

Z tc-1.4Z TC-2.0
1. What are the TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x teleconverters?
The TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x Z teleconverters are lens attachments that can be mounted between the main lens and a Nikon Z mount mirrorless camera to increase the focal length. The TC-1.4x increases focal length by 1.4x and the TC-2.0x by 2.0x.

2. Can Z teleconverters be used with any Z mount camera?
Yes, they can.

3. Which lenses can be used with the Z teleconverters?
Z teleconverters are designed to extend the focal length of NIKKOR Z lenses, so are for use with telephoto lenses. In addition, the lens has to be designed in a way that it can physically accept the attachment of the Z teleconverter.

Currently compatible lenses:
  • NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S (update the firmware on both the camera and lens to the latest versions)
  • NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8
  • NIKKOR Z 100–400mm f/4.5–5.6 VR S
  • NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S (can be used in conjunction with the lens’ built-in teleconverter)
  • NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S
  • NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S
  • NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S (can be used in conjunction with the lens’ built-in teleconverter)
  • NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR
  • NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S
Do not attempt to use a teleconverter with other lenses, as efforts to attach them may result in damage or malfunction.

4. What are the contents of the package with purchase of these products?
  • Teleconverter
  • BF-N2 Teleconverter Cap (front cap)
  • LF-N1 Lens Cap (rear cap)
  • CL-C4 Lens Case

5. Does the VR function built into the primary lens function when these teleconverters are used?
Yes, it does. Even if a teleconverter is used with the primary lens, there is virtually no drop in VR performance.

6. Can multiple teleconverters be used at once?
No, they cannot.

7. Can these teleconverters be used with the FTZ mount adapter?
No, they cannot.

8. Why can't the teleconverter be attached to the camera without first attaching a lens?
The lens mount on the front face of the teleconverter extends further than the mount base. Elements inside the camera that come into contact with the lens mount could be damaged. Therefore, be sure to attach the lens to the teleconverter before attaching the teleconverter to the camera.

9. When the TC-1.4x is used, the speed (brightness) of the primary lens drops by one stop. When the TC-2.0x is used, lens speed drops by two stops. Does exposure compensation need to be applied with the camera?
No, exposure is automatically compensated when an exposure mode that responds to changes in aperture value is applied.

10. Does AF performance (number of focus points available, accuracy, speed, etc.) drop when a teleconverter is used?
AF specifications (available number of focus points and area covered, focus mode or AF-area mode) and function are in no way restricted when a teleconverter is used. The drop in lens speed (brightness) and the longer focal lengths may affect AF performance (speed, accuracy) with darker scenes, but operation has been fine-tuned to make the most of primary lens performance.
