Can I recover corrupted images and/or deleted images on memory cards?

Sometimes photographers suspect that their memory card is corrupted because the card is not recognised by the camera although other compatible cards can be read and written to by the camera. As a first step, check you are using a Nikon approved memory card.

If one or a small number of images are corrupted, the usual cause is interrupted data transfer while the memory card is being accessed either by the camera (writing files) or by the computer (copying files to the computer). It may be possible to recover corrupt images from a memory card however, data blocks could be missing which means it would not be possible. More persistent corruption of images would indicate a memory card or camera problem.

When images on a memory card have been accidentally deleted either individually or by formatting the entire card, it is often possible to recover the images. Once a card has been corrupted or images have been deleted, it is very important to stop using the card immediately. If new information is saved to the card, the chances of recovering the lost information decrease significantly.
