NRW is Nikon's own still image file format developed specifically for use with high-end COOLPIX digital compact cameras to produce images of the highest quality. Images are saved as 12-bit RAW uncompressed data which has many times the tonal range of 8-bit images, this allows for finer adjustment of colour and improved detail in highlight and shadow areas. To select this file format, the NRW (or RAW) file format should be selected within the camera menu.
Images can be processed in the camera or on a computer after the image is captured. Image adjustments are stored separately from the image data which means it is possible to 'undo' changes and revert back to the original file so data is never lost. Settings that can be adjusted within the camera are white balance, exposure compensation, image quality, image size and COOLPIX Picture Control settings.
