Interchangeable focusing screens for SLR cameras

Only the cameras listed below have interchangeable focusing screens. The D4 and later models have an LCD screen that can display grid lines and crop frames which is incorporated into the viewfinder focusing screen. Therefore the need for interchangeable focusing screens has been eliminated on later models.

Types B, B3
Each screen offers unobstructed viewing and offers easy focusing over the entire matte surface, with no focusing aids such split-image range finder or microprisms. This screen is ideal for general photography. The B type screen is the standard focusing screen supplied with all Nikon AF SLR  cameras. Each version has the AF sensor brackets marked for the particular model of camera the screen is designed for.
Note the B screen is also provided with the D2X but not fitted as standard, see Type V screen.

Type EC-B (for F5)
Similar to the standard B screen, but with an Electrochromic (EC) device. This shows the focus area selected and offers unobstructed viewing and easy focusing on the overall matte surface.

Types K, K3
A matte screen with a fresnel field and 4mm split-image rangefinder and microprism collar. This is the standard screen fitted to most Nikon manual focus cameras such as the FM3a, FM2 and F3.

Types EC-E (for F5), E, E3
The E screen has a matte fresnel field. It most noticeable feature is the grid pattern etched into the surface of the screen. This screen is ideal for architectural photography or other photographic work where alignment is critical. The F5's EC-E screen is similar to the EC-B described above and includes the etched grid.

Types A, J, L, P
These screens are designed for general photography, the screens are matte fresnel and have either a split-image rangefinder or a microprism or in the case of the P screen both. The A and L screens have  split-image rangefinder with the version used in the L version angled at 45 degrees. The J screen uses a 4mm circle of micro prisms.
Nikon cameras were equipped with either the J or A type screens as standard until the middle of the 1970's.

Types C, M
Used for high-magnification close-ups or astrophotography. The Screens are both clear glass and feature a 4mm center circle for reference and crosshairs. The M screen has double crosshairs with millimetre scales marked on its surface.

Types G (G1˜G4)
The G focusing screens feature an exceptionally bright image because a matte surface is not used, instead a clear fresnel screen is used. This screen is suitable for poor lighting conditions. The G screen available in four models depending on the lens focal length.
The general rule for use of  the G screens are;
G1 for Fisheye lenses only
G2 for fixed focal lengths between 24mm and 200mm

G3 for 200mm to 400mm
G4 for 400mm or longer
Please read the instructions provide with the focusing screen for more details

Type U
The U screen is designed for telephoto lenses over 200mm. It features a Matte fresnel surface with 5mm and 12mm circles marked for reference.

Type V (for D2X)
Similar to the standard B screen, but includes etched markings indicating the full high-speed crop area to assist when shooting in high-speed crop mode. This is the standard screen fitted in the D2X.

Type W (for D2X)
Similar to the standard B screen, but has the areas outside of the High-Speed Crop area masked to assist shooting in High-Speed Crop mode. This screen is recommended only for users who use the High-Speed Crop Mode predominantly as the masking can not be turned off.

Notes on FM3a Focusing screens
Screens for the FM3a can also be used with the FM2, FM2n, FE2, and FE. When using an FM3a screen with the FE camera, exposure compensation of +1/3EV is required so that the cameras built-in meter will provide the correct exposure. This is due to the brightness of the FM3A screen compared to the original screen provided by the FE camera. No compensation is required when using FM3A screens with the FM2n and FE2.
