Can I take my camera battery on flights to America?

The U.S. DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has established restrictions on the carrying of lithium batteries aboard aircraft, effective January 1, 2008. The primary limitation is based upon the lithium equivalent content of batteries.

The lithium equivalent content of rechargeable Li-ion (lithium-ion) batteries for Nikon imaging products is less than 8 grams.
See the followings for the necessary precautions that should be made when carrying these rechargeable Li-ion batteries abroad an airplane. For further information, consult the airline or your travel agent.

Lithium battery installed in a camera or electronic device
Lithium batteries can be packed in checked or carry-on baggage as long as they are installed in electronic devices. Packing cameras, with the lithium battery installed, in carry-on baggage is recommended.

Loose lithium batteries (not installed in device)
Loose lithium batteries (not installed in a device) cannot be included in checked baggage. Loose, or spare, lithium batteries can be packed in carry-on baggage as long as they are properly protected from short circuiting (the battery terminals do not come in direct contact with metal) in one of the following methods:
  - Batteries are still in their original retail packaging.
  - Insulating tape is applied over the battery terminals, or the supplied cover is attached, to prevent short-circuiting.
  - Batteries are placed in individual plastic bags that do not transmit electricity.
