What is the advantage of autofocus at f/8 and which DSLR cameras support it?

DSLR cameras with the latest autofocus technology are more sensitive to light and can autofocus in low light conditions with a smaller aperture of f/8 (as opposed to f/5.6).

A key benefit of this increased autofocus sensitivity is when using teleconverters. Autofocusing is possible with the 1.4x or 1.7x teleconverters and precise autofocusing is possible even with the effective aperture value of f/8 by combining a 2.0x teleconverter with super-telephoto NIKKOR lenses, that are frequently used for sports shooting. This delivers a new level of potential when shooting distant subjects, such as sports or wildlife.

For example, if a NIKKOR lens with a maximum aperture of f/4 is used, such as the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR with the TC-20EIII teleconverter, the resulting effective maximum aperture would be f/8. This calculation can be applied across any lens/teleconverter combination, if the resulting maximum aperture is f/8 or faster, autofocus will be possible with a supported camera.
