Troubleshooting Guide - Laser Rangefinders

Nikon laser rangefinders measure distance using advanced laser ranging technology for pinpoint accuracy.

Cannot turn on
Make sure the batteries are inserted in the correct orientation and that the battery compartment cover is securely screwed in. For proper orientation of the battery, check the label inside the battery compartment.

There should be no gap between the battery compartment cover and the main unit. Verify that the contact on the battery cover is still attached.

Difficult to measure
When the power is turned on, the focus should be displayed on the target mark (cross hairs) in the field of view. Adjust focus by turning the diopter adjustment ring. The diopter adjustment ring may be difficult or tight to turn, this is normal and aims to avoid accidental turns.

If the objective lens is dirty, clean it. Use a soft, dry cloth such as a microfiber cloth for cleaning glasses to clean the lens. If the dirt cannot be removed, use a soft cloth moistened with an optical cleaning solution.

For measurement, hold the rangefinder  with both hands or lightly lean against a tree, wall or golf cart to prevent shake. Gently press the PWR button. If you cannot measure a large nearby target (i.e. a building about 15 yards away), please contact the retailer where the product was purchased from or Nikon Customer Support.

The field of view is dark and nothing can be seen
Your field of view will be dark if your eye is too close to the eyepiece. Keep your eyes away from the eyepiece and look for a stable view. In most cases, approximately 10mm to 15mm is appropriate.

The target is not clearly visible and looks foggy
The eyepiece or objective lens may be dirty. If so, use a soft, dry cloth such as a microfiber cloth for cleaning glasses to clean the lens. If the dirt cannot be removed, use a soft cloth moistened with an optical cleaning solution.

If the internal lens of a waterproof product gets foggy, please contact the retailer where the product was purchased or Nikon Customer Support.

Cannot see the target
Check the eyepiece in the instruction manual to ensure proper set up and use.

Internal display is dark or light
Check the instruction manual to see if your product has a function to change the brightness of the internal display.  If this feature is available, change the brightness accordingly.

Covering the objective lens with your hand makes it easier to check the brightness of the internal display.

To focus the internal display, turn the dioptre adjustment ring. It may be difficult or tight to turn, this is normal and aims to avoid accidental turns.

LOCKED ON sign is not displayed
For products equipped with a short-distance priority detection function, a visual cue will appear when multiple overlapping targets such as a flagstick in front of a hazard or object in front of trees are detected.

The sign displays the measurement distance to the nearest target.

When you shake the product, you may hear a sound from inside
For products equipped with the STABILIZED function, a sound will be heard if vibration is applied when the power is off. This sound is of the internal floating lens elements and not a malfunction.

When the power is off, the field of view is shaking
For products equipped with the STABILIZED function, the field of view will be shaking when the power is turned off.

It is a phenomenon caused by the internal structure, not a malfunction. When the power is turned on, the shaking stops.

Actual distance indicator does not blink
This feature is available in some models and allows the user to turn the Actual distance indicator ON or OFF. To do so, follow the instructions available in the User’s Manual.

Bear in mind that the Actual distance indicator will only blink if the setting is ON and the measurement display mode is set to Actual distance mode (D).

Check your product's instruction manual to confirm the Actual distance indicator function modes.

The electronic sound of DUAL LOCKED ON does not sound/quake
For models with this feature, the user is able to turn the sound/quake ON/OFF. To have it on, follow the instructions on the User’s Manual.
